Passing the CE 3a test is a key milestone in professional HGV training. It covers the essential off-road elements of articulated lorry operation, including coupling, uncoupling, and precise reversing—a great foundation for what comes next.
What Does the CE 3a Test Involve?
The 3a module of the Category CE licence focuses on off-road manoeuvres, which must be mastered before candidates move on to the 3b (on-road) test. It includes:

🚛 Safe uncoupling and recoupling of an articulated trailer
🚛 Demonstrating awareness of safety procedures
🚛 Use of mirrors, observation skills, and precise vehicle handling
